The SADC Groundwater Management Institute is implementing the “Groundwater for Advancing Resilience (G4DR) Project in Africa”
The Southern African Development Community Groundwater Management Institute, in collaboration with the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW), the International Water Management Institute, and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), is implementing the Groundwater for Advancing Resilience (G4DR) initiative across Africa. This initiative is supported by the Ministries of Water and Mining in Benin, the Ministry of Water Resources in Malawi, the Ministry of Water Resources Management in Mozambique, the Ministry of Water and Village Hydraulics in Togo, and the Ministry of Water and Environment in Uganda.
The Groundwater for Advancing Resilience (G4DR) in Africa project is a comprehensive initiative aimed at addressing the current disregard for groundwater in planning and management. This collaborative effort seeks to significantly improve water security and resilience across the African continent by promoting the strategic and sustainable development and management of groundwater resources.
The four-year project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), aims to improve governance and capacity for groundwater management. It addresses several challenges, including a lack of data and tools for effective monitoring and sustainable groundwater planning. The project also seeks to enhance experience and demonstration in groundwater planning, increase the involvement of young professionals in this field, and compile, synthesize, and evaluate the effectiveness of groundwater-based solutions in planning processes.
SADC-GMI’s input in the project:
- Install data loggers in selected boreholes and analyze the collected data in Malawi and Mozambique. These loggers will monitor and record valuable data on groundwater levels and other relevant parameters.
- Facilitate knowledge exchange, study tours, and Communities of Practice to promote cross-pilot learning and foster collaborations among stakeholders.
- Synthesize and disseminate lessons learned from the project. This will involve compiling reports, case studies, and other educational materials that highlight successful strategies and lessons learned. These resources will be disseminated widely to ensure that the information reaches relevant communities and stakeholders, thereby enhancing the impact of the project’s findings.
