Overview:
Anyone who owns a borehole is interested to know the maximum discharge rate at which they can abstract/pump groundwater in such a way that they can be assured of continuously getting that yield from their borehole. This borehole yield is sometimes referred to as the sustainable borehole yield, reliable yield, and sometimes safe yield.
The estimation of borehole yield is based on the principles of aquifer pumping tests. To estimate borehole sustainable yield, an appropriate aquifer pumping test should be conducted and the data should be analyzed using appropriate methods taking into consideration the capacity of the aquifer system and groundwater needs among other factors.
The components of the training workshop are therefore designed to cover the principles of designing, planning, and performing borehole yield tests and the analysis of draw down data. Making use of data from real-life case studies, the facilitator will take the participants through processing and analysis of the data to understand flow characteristics and estimate the borehole yield.
The benefits of attending are gaining a theoretical and practical understanding on the following:
Course Facilitator: Prof. Modreck Gomo
Modreck Gomo is an Associated Professor in groundwater working at the Institute for Groundwater Studies, University of the Free State in South Africa.
His first degree was a BSc Honours in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Zimbabwe, followed by a BSc Honours in Geohydrology (2008), an MSc in Geohydrology (2009), and a Ph.D. in Geohydrology (2011) from the University of the Free in South Africa.
Professor Gomo has experience in a wide range of groundwater research and consultancy projects. He has contributed to various capacity-building training projects on groundwater and transboundary aquifers in the SADC region. He is consistently publishing theoretical and practical work on a variety of groundwater aspects with the main purpose of improving groundwater site characterization techniques. Prof. Gomo is serving as an Editorial Board Member for Sustainable Water Resources Management (SWAM) and Discover Water journals. Professor Modreck Gomo is also a registered Professional Natural Scientist with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) and a Professional member of the Groundwater Water Division of South Africa.
